Las Vegas let’s you pay parking tickets with food to hide that they criminalized homelessness

LAS VEGAS - In a vain attempt to save face the city of Las Vegas is offering the chance to pay of parking tickets with food donations.

The Las Vegas City Council unanimously voted in favor of allowing parking tickets issued between Oct. 16 and Nov. 16, 2019, to be paid with donations of food for those in need. However, at the very next council meeting, during this same period, they voted to make it illegal to sleep outside.

The measure comes as many US cities are opting to criminalize homelessness rather than address the systemic problems causing it. While some communities are experiencing success utilizing housing first models to end homelessness.

Many communities have faced backlash and lawsuits for creating sweeping anti-homeless laws. Maybe Las Vegas will be the next in a long line of cities that throws away money on lawsuits rather than investing it in practical and proven solutions.
