This is a beautiful vintage sterling silver image of Our Lady of Guadalupe placed on a holy medal. The legend of Juan Diego says that he was heading to attend mass when the Virgin Mary appeared to him, speaking in his own language, and wearing traditional Aztec clothing. The bishop disbelieved the story and asked for Juan Diego to give him a sign. He saw the apparition again and she gave him a bundle of roses, which he placed in his tunic (or traditional tilma) and carried them back to the bishop. Juan Diego opened his tilma in the bishop’s presence, the roses fell to the ground, and the bishop sank to his knees. On the tilma where the roses had been appeared an image of Mary exactly as Juan Diego had described her. Our Lady of Guadalupe remains a powerful symbol and her image is associated with everything from motherhood to feminism to social justice. The shrine where the original image stands on display is the most visited Catholic pilgrimage site in the world, and the world's third most-visited sacred site.
